Mindset Check-in (2022-2024)

Mindset by DIVE Studios is a wellness app designed to make self-care easy and accessible through authentic storytelling and story sharing. I led the design of the check-in experience which sought to add features like a Daily Streak, Daily Quote, and Daily Journal to add more value to the Mindset app experience.

Problems & Goals

The Mindset app already has an established audience through the its Artist Collections where celebrities share their personal stories and wellness journeys through storytelling. We wanted to find a way to add more value for users to have them use the app on a more regular basis aside from listening to the Artist Collections.

Understanding the User

To understand the needs of our audience, we conducted user surveys and user interviews. We were able to survey and interview over 300 participants. The participants were young adults, mostly based in the United States.

Research revealed that lack of time, lack of knowledge, motivation, and consistency were the top pain points for the participants.

Pain Points

  • Time: An overwhelming number of participants felt like not having enough time was an obstacle for their self-care

  • Lack of Knowledge: Many participants felt they did not know enough about mental health or know what to do.

  • Motivation: Many participants were not able to find motivation to care for their mental health

  • Consistency: Many participants found it challenging to be consistent in caring for their mental health

Ideation & Design

After synthesizing all of the user research, we sought to develop features to address these pain points. We explored features such as a daily streak, daily quote, and daily journal.

User Flow

Check-in Page

The first set of features launched were: the Daily Streak, Daily Quote, Mood Journal, Daily Mindset and Gratitude Journal. All of these guided features were designed to be an easy daily self-care routine to be completed in 10 minutes or less. All of these features were able to address the different pain points of time, lack of knowledge, consistency, and motivation.

Daily Streak

The Daily Streak feature hoped to motivate and help users stay consistent with their self-care. The design features a calendar with a week view, showcasing their daily progress. A day is considered "complete" if the user has completed all activities on the "Today" screen.

Daily Mood Journal

The earliest version of the Mood Journal allowed users to use an emoji to describe their current mood. Optionally, they are able to add a note if they want to say more about what they are feeling.

Daily Mindset

The Daily Mindset was an idea born out of the existing Daily Boosters from the Artist Collections. These are short audio clips, about 5 minutes each, talking about a different topic each day to help users on their mental wellness journey. Some topics include "Your Morning Calm," "A Meditation for Self Awareness," and "Focus Forward."

Daily Gratitude

We also integrated a daily gratitude journal to help users boost their mood with a daily gratitude exercise. To help guide them on what they can feel grateful for, we included a topic randomizer to give them new prompts each day.

Daily Quote

Users love our daily quotes, especially since many of them feature quotes from their favorite idols and celebrities. This is also one of our most shareable features, and is also integrated with our social media marketing.

Results & Feedback

Overall the launch of the Mindset Check-in feature was successful and met with positive user feedback. This new set of features improved app retention by 3x, giving users more motivation to open the app on a regular basis.

Many users reported that they felt the features were helping improve their mental wellness, and that they were excited to continue on their self-care journey.

Improvements

We continued to improve and develop the Mindset Check-in experience through 2023 and 2024. Some notable improvements made were: adding AI Integration, UI Improvements, and Mood Insights.

Mindset AI

Shortly after launching the Check-in feature, we knew that integrating AI would be a game-changer and really boost the value that our users could get out of their daily check-ins. We integrated AI into the Daily Mood feature to help users talk about their mood. This was the first of its kind at launch. (View launch video promotion)

UI Improvements

Several improvements to the interface were also implemented. The latest version features a progress bar and a timeline UI. This helps users visualize their progress as they go through their self-care routine.

Mood Insights

We were also able to integrate Mood Insights to give users a rich overview of how they've progressed with their self-care.
